The director's dig at modern Conservative America serves as dressing for a modern but engaging romantic comedy on predictable lines, mainly winning through its central performances, that hark back to Woody Allen or When Harry Met Sally.

A nostalgic rites-of-passage novel about a certain time and place in the 1980s is turned by this noted director into a lyrical lesbian love story, slow and going nowhere in places, but with a powerful ending and formative performances.
