May 10th
Star Trek* (12A)
Vue Romford

Hotshot cadet James Kirk follows in his father's footsteps into the Star Federation, and helps his (future) friend Mr. Spock to defeat a vengeful Romulan.
Adequate, slightly miscast re-continuation of the Star Trek saga, focusing more on action than the philosophical side of the original TV series, with some modern fashions thrown in (jerky close-ups, violent fist fights, characters shouting over each other, etc.), and the added bonus of the original Spock looking down on the uncanny new one. Quite fun, but illogical - like most episodes of the TV series, especially those that involved time travel.

I mostly enjoyed the new "Trek", although the style of the space battles were a bit too fast for me, which is something the new "Transformers" films suffer from as well: the very fast cutting of the effects shots. Also, I wish the music had more grandeur, it felt a bit flat - see the bit where the Enterprise comes up through Saturn's rings for example. At least JJ and his actors got the characters down well, and it was generally fun to watch. Still not as good as "Star Trek the Wrath of Khan".

I have to say that I saw this flick for a second time while on holiday in America in a digital screen, and it was far better experience. The quality of the image was amazing, and I was happy to see far more detail in the effects shots so the fast paced cutting was less of a problem.
