Spice miners in a faraway galaxy tussle for control of a desert planet that is the source of the spice, with one particular young man rising into the ascendancy to fulfil a prophecy.
A colossal undertaking that simply does not engage as a story, a clumsy adaptation of an epic novel where the director's eye for visual flair overrides both plot and structure, and some of the detail is repulsive. An extraordinary cast look as baffled as everybody else, and all the archaic sets and massive expertise go to waste.

I've owned the "Alan Smithee" extended TV version of this film for some years now (an early DVD purchase). Unfortunately, I've always found it difficult to sit through, as it never grabs my attention and at lot of it seems muddled. Shame. :(
I believe that there was another version of the story done for tv in the late 90s....??

I went to the movies to see this back in the dark ages. I remember thinking it was crap and all I recall about it now is Sting in that crotch-sling. Ugh.
And some sort of creature burrowing under the sand, but that may be that Kevin Bacon thing. The 80s. It all sorta runs together.
Carla? That 'burrowing creature' film was "Tremors"!
